AOL Wooing Users to Portal, With a Little Help From Its Foes - New York Times

AOL will spend $50 Million with Google and Yahoo to promote the new AOL portal! The first plan was to spend the money on TV ads but it was determined that Google and Yahoo would direct more leads for less money.

Think about this upside down situation for a bit. Is it not incredible that AOL would be reduced to paying Google and Yahoo for leads to its search engine. Google in particular is happy to oblige as Google shares revenues on AOL searchers!
